Mumbai
Mumbai
Mumbai derived both its present name, and past name of ‘Bombay’, from its earliest inhabitants and its strategic location.
The Koli community, who are among the original inhabitants of the city, worshipped the goddess Mumba devi, giving the city its name of Mumbai. The name ‘Bombay’ on the other hand, is believed to have originated from the Portuguese phrase ‘Bom Bahia’, which means ‘Beautiful Bay’.
